Details of Chrysler inventory re-distribution plan emerge

Will “rejected” dealers also have to pay transportation charges to unload their inventories? (5/27/2009) DealersEdge Daily Headlines New Jersey Chrysler dealer Bruce Coleman was on his way home from Florida after attending a wedding when he got the bad news. Both of his stores were on Chrysler’s “rejected” dealer list. As hard as that news was to take, harder still was the problem of what to do with his new-vehicle inventory. Chrysler pointedly told its “rejected” dealers that the factory would not buy back unsold inventory, but it would assist in re-distributing the vehicles to retained dealerships. Last Wednesday, Chrysler let affected dealers know what kind of assistance they can expect. DealersEdge has a copy of the Vehicle Re-Distribution Process and it appears to raise as many questions as it answers. The questions revolve around charges that Chrysler could assess for the inspection and delivery of the vehicles. Not only did the “rejected” dealers get the news by letter, (For comedian Jon Stewart’s reaction to the letters click here) but the latest insult is Chrysler’s sudden offer to buy back unsold vehicles from the affected dealers before they lose their franchises June 9. The company originally intended not to buy them back, but came under political pressure to change its plan. Mr. Coleman, for instance, told the Trenton Times that he learned only last Thursday that Chrysler would pay for dealers’ cars, minus a $350 per vehicle fee for inspection and delivery. However, dealers had only until 3 p.m. Friday to accept the offer, and would not actually get to see a copy of the agreement document until the following Tuesday. Then an e-mail from attorneys at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, the firm representing Chrysler dealers in the bankruptcy proceedings, warned against signing anything. Dealers who accepted “would effectively be conceding the termination of their respective dealership agreement.” The $350 charge applies only to 2009 model vehicles and it is unclear whether the rejected dealers will actually have to pay the fee. An example from Chrysler’s memo to dealers shows the fee as a wash with Chrysler assuming the $350 charge and the purchasing dealer then paying Chrysler. 2008 model-year vehicles will face a $1500 charge. Bo Corwin, a Pennsylvania Chrysler dealer and member of the Chrysler Affected Dealers Association, said dealers want to have more of a say. He said the national group of dealers being dropped by the automaker already has filed a motion of objection, and the dealers want a 60-day period in which they would sell off their cars. “Why not do what GM did and give us a date and an opportunity to wind down our businesses? That way, at least you know what the end date is, and you play accordingly,” Mr. Corwin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said Chrysler’s offer — made late last week — to help the closing dealerships was “neither fair nor equitable.” The company, he said, is offering to broker sales of unsold cars to surviving dealers at a cost far below what the closing dealership paid for the car originally. Dealer Jack Fitzgerald remains skeptical. “What’s fair and equitable?” he asked. “Invoice price is fair and equitable, so why not say that?” Chrysler president Jim Press said the company has 200 field representatives working on the transfer of inventory among dealers.

May 2009 Chrysler Jeep News Update!

May 2009 - Eighteen Pittsburgh Chrysler, Dodge, & Jeep Dealers are closed down by Chrysler!

•      Chrysler has terminated close to one third of their national dealer total.  Eighteen of them are in the Pittsburgh Tri-State area.
   
       All affected dealers may not be able to offer any rebates or incentives and will need to go to court to get any money owed to them.  This essentially makes them immediately uncompetitive.  Contact me if you want an updated list of these dealers!
